This time I am heading to Charleston, South Carolina, with some girlfriends. One of them has a daughter who lives in Charleston. She has been giving us restaurant recommendations, and she has a friend who has an AirB&B where we are staying for only the price of the cleaning crew! I think we will have a great time, if I ever get there. Tonight, I received a cancellation notice for my American Airlines flight which was to leave tomorrow morning and arrive at 3:08 p.m. I already had a boarding pass! My friends’ flights on Southwest will arrive at 1:50 p.m. AA gave me a choice of 3 flights to rebook tomorrow, and the earliest one does not arrive until 10:10 p.m. My friends and I had rented a car together, so they are going to have to come back to the airport late at night to pick me up.
I had a friend in Addison who was trying to fly back to Dallas from Atlanta with her husband. Their American Airlines flights were cancelled three times over three days. Finally, they decided to rent a car and drove 20 hours to get home. AA did not offer to pay for their almost $1,000 worth of hotel rooms and rental car. She thinks it happens in smaller airports where American does not have a hub, so there is less staff there. I have been hearing that since pilots were off so long during the pandemic, they now have to go through retraining and certification. Plus, some of the flight attendants never came back; they took other jobs. So, now there is just not enough staff to keep up with the pent-up demand of travelers.
