Saturday, April 25, 2020 – Taking a Beach Vacation at Home

Whoever lives in this apartment knows how to escape from his or her surroundings. And it’s obvious that the place he or she would rather be is at the beach — palm tree lamp, tropical print furniture and a bouquet of “fresh” flowers on the table. The only thing missing is a drink with an umbrella.

I have been fortunate enough to vacation on the Florida, California and Hawaii coasts, along with the Thailand and Croatian coasts. There is nothing more peaceful and soothing to me than the feel of powdery sand between my toes, the crash of ocean waves or the sight of sparkling deep blue water.

According to Breana Bill at Michigan State University in Odyssey, here are 8 ways to pretend you’re on vacation while you’re at home:

1. Try an ethnic restaurant. Instead of taking out food from your favorite pizza or Chinese food place, try something new. Pretend you’re in another country by trying their foods; food is the best part of vacations anyway.

2. Make a homemade piña colada. Here’s a recipe: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/pina-colada-recipe0-1956362. And then plop down on your couch and watch your favorite Netflix show. It's the best scenario — tropical smoothie, Netflix shows and pajamas.

3. Wear your old sandals or flip flops around the house. I don’t know, it’s worth a try to lift your spirits. At least you'll be comfortable.

4. Go to somewhere you've never been in your town. Go to a new restaurant and get takeout or maybe a new park. This is like conquering new territory, just as you would on vacation. Plus, you can find some really cool places you didn't know existed.

5. Read a new book while listening to sounds of the ocean. It's a lot more relaxing than it seems. The video above is a full hour long.

6. Shop online for some summer clothes. Who cares if you have nowhere to go anytime soon, it’ll get you excited for the warm months to come.

7. Listen to some summery music. I don’t know what you define as such, but some good country music might do the trick, or maybe you’re more of a Beach Boys type of person; you do you.

8. Relax the way you would on vacation but do it in pajamas. Because nothing gets better than days where you wear your pajamas all day. And hey, the point of vacation is to catch up on your sleep and take a mental break, so what's a better way to do that than pajamas?

9. Check out beach photos online. This one is my suggestion. I figure that if viewing photos of nature is good for your health, then pictures of the beach probably are too.
